Fundations is research-based, multi-sensory phonics program developed by Wilson Language that provides explicit and systematic instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, spelling, and handwriting for kindergarten-third grade children.
Reading and Writing Workshop:
Developed by Lucy Calkins at Teachers College, Columbia in NYC, this is a predictable framework for reading and writing instruction that includes the following:
* A minilesson of 5-10 minutes in which the teacher teaches and models a strategy that good readers and writers use.
* Students are sent off to work independently on that and previous lessons taught.
* As students work, the teacher confers with students individually or in small groups to give individualized instruction and support.
* The workshop ends with a share, celebrating students who were trying/doing strategies taught.
This structure allows students to read and write at their individual levels and teachers to teach and support students based on their individual and unique needs. It also fosters a love for reading and writing, as other components are: interactive read-alouds, shared reading and writing, and interactive reading and writing.
